Island with Character

Rügen is Germany’s largest island, located in the Baltic Sea off the northeastern coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. With its deeply indented shoreline, the island offers a wide variety of bays, lagoons, and bodden – ideal for diverse and scenic sailing experiences.

A Top Spot for Sailing

Rügen ranks among the most popular sailing destinations in Germany. Whether you're navigating open waters or exploring sheltered inshore areas, the island offers excellent conditions for both experienced sailors and newcomers.

Diverse Opportunities

From Cape Arkona and Hiddensee to the iconic chalk cliffs near Sassnitz, Rügen is surrounded by natural highlights. Well-equipped marinas, numerous charter services, and a solid nautical infrastructure make the island a convenient and attractive base for sailing in the southern Baltic.

Between Bodden and Open Sea: Sailing Diversity around Rügen

Rügen offers one of the most varied sailing areas in the Baltic Sea. Its 570-kilometer-long coastline provides plenty of space for sporty legs or relaxed day cruises. One of the most popular routes leads all the way around the island – past iconic landmarks such as the Königsstuhl (King’s Chair), Cape Arkona, and the picturesque Mönchgut peninsula.

The eastern coast opens up to the open Baltic Sea, offering more challenging conditions for seasoned sailors. Northeasterly winds are common, allowing for exciting upwind and downwind courses along the island's outer edge. In contrast, the western side features the calm waters of the bodden – perfect for beginners, families, or small boats.

Outstanding sailing areas include the Großer Jasmunder Bodden, the waters surrounding Hiddensee, and the Greifswalder Bodden south of Rügen. These spots combine reliable winds with tranquil anchorages, charming harbors, and stunning natural surroundings.

For those without their own boat, Rügen offers plenty of charter options – from performance sailing boats to comfortable yachts. Popular ports such as Lauterbach, Breege, Wiek, and Gager serve as hubs for rentals, sailing lessons, and guided cruises. Local sailing clubs also contribute to the island’s vibrant maritime culture.

A highlight of the regional racing calendar is the Rund Rügen Regatta, which attracts numerous crews each year. Smaller regattas and sailing events take place throughout the season, especially between May and September.

Whether you're looking for a nature-focused getaway, a sporty sailing challenge, or an easygoing day on the water, Rügen is a top destination that checks all the boxes.
